KISS AND
TELL: INTERVIEW WITH ERIC SINGER
(from morningsun.net)
The son of a popular Cleveland bandleader, Kiss drummer
Eric Singer grew up in the 70s listening to WMMS and jamming on drums with his
neighborhood rocker pals.
He found his career path early.
In 1984, Singer went on tour with hard-rock goddess Lita Ford, and a year later joined
Black Sabbath. In 1989, he played drums on Kiss frontman Paul Stanleys solo tour,
which led to an ongoing gig with Kiss. Singer simultaneously has been Alice Coopers
drummer since 2000, and has played on three Cooper albums to date.
Singer has played with Kiss steadily since 2004, appears on the bands forthcoming
album, Sonic Boom, and is on tour with the band.
Singer, 51, was on his way to Detroit for tour rehearsals
when he phoned to chat Tuesday afternoon.
Q. Tell me about the preshow ritual of putting on your Kiss makeup.
A. Its like the calm before the storm, if you will. The four of us get together and
its like a war room where were preparing for battle. Were sitting there
for a couple of hours and theres always great music. Gene will play deejay a lot of
time. He likes to pull out old crazy blues stuff and doo-wop. Its very eclectic.

HOW MANY
KISS SONGS DO YOU KNOW?
Let's go.
Kiss' love affair with Detroit -- and the city's relationship with the legendary costumed rock outfit -- has lasted longer than many marriages.
The group recorded the bulk of its "Alive" album here, kicked off its reunion tour at Tiger Stadium in 1996 and gave the city one of its most enduring anthems and monikers, "Detroit Rock City."
Friday and Saturday, Kiss rekindles its relationship with the Motor City when it returns to Cobo Arena, the site of its landmark 1975 "Alive" LP.
"It was clear from the beginning that Detroit just got us," says frontman Paul Stanley, on the phone earlier this month. "They understood us instinctively and intuitively. Before we were headlining anywhere, we were headlining in Detroit."
The band decided to open its latest tour,
dubbed "Kiss Alive 35," at Cobo when they heard the arena might be in trouble.
Tour dates for the trek were already booked, but they tacked on two shows at the front of
the tour to return to the city -- and the arena -- that helped make them famous.

remember you can meet him Saturday at Vintage Vinyl in NJ and Looney Tunes Sunday on LI.
The poll on the home page for reaction to new Kiss and Ace songs will stay up for a
few more days. I noticed now over 2000 people have voted and Ace has puilled ahead in the
head to head. Still a little time to make your opinion heard. I am now doing press being
interviewed about the upcoming new season of TMS. Amazing how many people are asking me to
talk about Ace or Kiss. I can not comment on the Kiss album because I simply have not
heard anything but the single yet.

INTERVIEW
WITH ROSS HALFIN
(from Fabio/www.deucenews.com)
November 9 2008, Ross
Halfins Diary: I had breakfast with Paul Stanley, The Love Gun. Paul told me
they may make a KISS record, which he'll produce. A real 70s KISS style record. If Paul
can stop painting which is his other career...
Well Paul did not stop his solo career but the new KISS record is here!!!
And this time Ross Halfin talked also to me!!!
Hi Ross Im so
grateful you accepted to be interviewed, and thank you also from all the KISS fans around!
As I was saying, we are so excited about the new amazing album from KISS, their first
studio album in almost 11 years, and the entire buzz about it started from those few lines
on your blog [link]!!!
Back in early days you started shooting B&W for Sounds, Melody Maker and the
NME.
Years has passed and your photos made the covers of the most famous magazines
around.
Does the music scene (from a photographer perspective) changed a lot from those
days?
Has it changed? Of course it has. Bands expect you to work for nothing, for the honour of shooting photos. This is not helped by the fact that every idiot with a digital camera thinks that they are a photographer.
You spent most of the
80's touring with bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Def Leppard, KISS, Motley Crue, Paul
McCartney, George Harrison, The Who, amongst many others.
Some nice recollections about that period?
I remember shooting KISS onstage at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The band had me come on stage and I did a line up shot with the audience behind them. I took my time taking the picture and Paul Stanley turned around to the crowd and said ;'he's very good but he's very slow!
I believe KISS is the most visual band in the rock scene and making photos at their concert must be a blast. Would you like to share with use some of your techniques and how you like/prefer to shoot them?
It's quite hard to shoot KISS because they wear a lot of white make up and use a lot of white light making it hard to balance the exposure. When they use coloured light it's good. The video screens make it tough as well. Plus like most of the bands I like, they are getting older so youre fighting with the age and that's were KISS' make up helps them.
Ring master in KISS is certainly Mr. Paul Stanley, are you close friend I guess!
Out of all the rock stars I know you can't say many are your friends. I guess Paul Stanley is, which is nice as I started off as a fan. Paul is one of those people that will always reply to your email or phone call.
Again from your blog: June 21 2009: Fathers Day today - spent it at the pool. The Love Gun Paul Stanley was at the hotel for lunch with his family. Jimmy and I chatted with him and his son Evan. Paul showed me the new KISS album cover on his iPhone and I'm still not saying what it's called, but it's old school KISS... I recently interviewed Michael [Doret] and I think he made a really cool job on that, whats your thoughts about Sonic Boom cover?
Classic KISS, what more could you want?
Most of us listened to the 30 Sonic Boom samples. I suppose you have listened to the whole record, any favourite track?
I haven't heard it yet. I am looking forward to getting it on CD and listening to it on the stereo. I'm very old school that way.
Reading your diary it seems the world is your town!!! You are always in a place different from the previous day. Are you planning to follow some dates of the forthcoming KISS tour? And what are your next projects/activities you will be involved in?
I have no plans at
the moment to shoot KISS although when they come to Europe next year I'm sure I'll be
there.
Well be sure Ill Be there too!!!
Ross, thanks again
spending your time with me and for the cool insides you usually provide us.
Keep in touch
Fabio

KISS TO
PLAY 3 NEW SONGS?
(from Sonic/Kiss Forum)
Two of my friends met Paul & Tommy at the Detroit airport both were in great spirits
and signed some stuff for them! Paul stated that the tour will run till next summer and
that they will be playing at least 3 new songs in the set!
They asked them about Sonic Boom being leaked and they said there's nothin they
could do about it! Paul was happy about the responces the fans have posted about it so
far.
He did let the cat out of the bag and said the new show is a HUGE screen behind the
band and that there would cool surprizes during the show! He heard the Ace CD and liked it
alot and hopes Ace stays clean and is happy.
Tommy said he's not hurt about the comments Ace has posted about the leads on Sonic
Boom and said he so happy with Sonic Boom and can't wait for everyone to hear it and that
the band is on fire and will kick your ass on this tour. I'm going to both shows at Cobo
and I'll post my reveiws.

BLACKIE
LAWLESS COMMENTS ON GENE & ACE
In a recent interview with Metalzone.gr, Blackie Lawless commets
on Gene and Ace:
"One day
most people know I knew Ace Frehley, I knew him from
long time ago when we were kids but Gene (Simons) was a big influence in my life. Not so
much because of what KISS did as a band but because there was one time in particular, I
was about 19 and I was really I thought thats it Ive had enough in the music
business I was going to quit. And so I called Ace one day and he wasnt there but
Gene picked up the phone and so we talked for a few minutes. He said how are you doing
he knew the band I was playing and he knew the guys, and I told him I am tired of
what I am doing. I dont think I am ever going to make it. I am thinking about doing
something else. He says, dont quit whatever you do. You have something thats
different from other people. If you keep doing what youre doing you will eventually
get there. And he talked to me for about 30 minutes, and after we finished talking it was
that pep talk that I needed. And it made me feel a lot better. Over the years we would
talk and as my career started happening, and I remember one day we were on tour. We were
at sound check one day and he sitting out in the audience and I went over and we started
talking and were just basically shooting a breeze and he had this troubled look on
his face and I said whats the matter, is everything ok? He goes, 15 years ago I
thought I knew everything, and now I dont know anything! And I look at him and I got
really mad! I got really angry with him. I told him what are you talking about youre
the guy thats in a big way responsible for me being here and now youre telling
me that everything you told me before was a lie? I got mad and walked off. As years went
by I started to begin to understand what he was talking about. Gene is like I think 9
years older than me, and he had already been down that road before he was experiencing it
and I too later would experience it. Heres the guy that I admire so much telling me
that he dont know whats going on anymore and I didnt want to hear it so
I walked off and not in a nice way either. I said I am out of here forget it. I just
didnt want to listen. But I would eventually begin to understand what he was saying.
When you get to that point, thats the beginning of true knowledge. Because until we
humble ourselves or for some reason become humbled whether its by our choosing or
not, thats when we begin to understand. Thats when the real education begins. "

MY NEW
YORK: ACE FREHLEY
(from nypost.com)
Along with his fellow New York natives in the band Kiss, Bronx-born guitarist Ace Frehley
ignited a rock revolution in the 70s, inspiring a nation of young headbangers to
pick up guitars with a mix of slick licks and (literally) fiery showmanship. Now the man
whose biggest hit was New York Groove has just released his first solo album
in 20 years, Anomaly, on his new label, Bronx Born Records. While the times
may have changed, his crunchy guitar remains as biting as ever. This is his New York.

Schorr....Heres an excerpt:
Rockpages.gr: Did you have the chance to meet Peter Criss or anyone working for
the KISS management?
Todd Schorr: Peter and his then wife (who is on the cover with the other models)
came over to my studio a couple of times. He was a nice, down to earth guy
very
friendly.
Rockpages.gr: How come you didnt work with him again?
Todd Schorr: I didnt work for Peter after that for who knows what reason. I
was doing a lot of different work at that time, including Time Magazine covers and covers
for other bands like AC/DC.

BRUCE
KULICK RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA IN DECEMBER
(from Blabbermouth)
Former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick is coming
back to Australia armed with his first new solo album in five years "BK3" and a brand new live show that promises to
delve into the depths of material from his twelve year tenure with KISS
and his work in the last thirteen years as a solo artist. "BK3"
is Kulick's third solo release, hence the title.
Australian fans will be among the first to hear the album, which will be released ahead of
its worldwide debut at the concerts.
"BK3" features the soaring guitars and signature riffs
that Kulick is known for, along with an array of special guests
that include former KISS bandmates Gene Simmons and Eric Singer, KNACK lead vocalist Doug Fielder, and Nick Simmons (Gene's son and rising star in his own right) making his vocal
recording debut.
Bruce promises the shows will be worth the wait and will feature a
plethora of KISS tunes from the eight albums he recorded with the
band between 1984 and 1996. Hits like "God Gave Rock and Roll To
You II", "Crazy Crazy Nights", "Forever" and "Tears Are
Falling" will be nestled alongside many rarities never performed live by KISS themselves.
Kulick has become a regular in Australia, first visiting these
shores in 1978 as part of MEAT LOAF's "Bat
Out Of Hell" band, with KISS in 1995, as part of ESP (a side project featuring members of Alice
Cooper's band, KISS and MÖTLEY CRÜE),
and several times as a solo artist. Most recently, he conducted a whirlwind guitar clinic
tour, hitting four cities during a week in April 2009.
Since departing KISS in 1996, Bruce has
remained active in the music industry, forming the band UNION with
former MÖTLEY CRÜE vocalist John Corabi,
acting as a camp counselor at various Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp
events, working with both Paul Stanley and Gene
Simmons on their solo projects, recording commentaries for the multi platinum
retrospective "Kissology" DVDs, and, since 2001, playing
with the legendary American band GRAND FUNK RAILROAD as their lead
guitarist. In between all of these activities, he recorded his first solo album, "Audio Dog", in 2001, followed up by 2003's "Transformer". "BK3" marks
yet another milestone for the veteran guitarist, and he is very much looking forward to
beginning the journey here in his "second home" of Australia.
Tickets go on sale on September 21 at the venues and outlets below:
Dec. 12 - Adelaide, Australia - Fowlers
Dec. 13 - Sydney, Australia The Gaelic Theatre
Dec. 14 - Melbourne, Australia - The Corner Hotel

MESSAGE
FROM BRUCE KULICK: BRUCE & ACE FREHLEY AT GRAMMY MUSEUM
(from kulick.net)
Monday night I was invited to see Ace Frehley at the Grammy
Museum in downtown Los Angeles. I'd heard about the new museum, and the idea of a drop
party (meaning the "day" the record comes out) for Ace obviously made me excited
to attend.
It was held in the acoustically perfect theatre, and Ace came out to a capacity crowd of
200 very loyal and excited fans. He looked great, and during the interview was funny and
reflective talking about his new "Anomaly" CD.
I enjoyed the songs that were introduced and played through the big JBL system, and I
especially think that Bob Santelli, the Executive Director and interviewer for the
evening, did a great job picking the songs to discuss. Ace and the team that helped create
the CD answered questions regarding the music, lyrics and inspirations for the songs.
Afterwards, the fans were able to purchase the CD and meet Ace. I was able to get a great
pix of us courtesy of Mark Weiss, who has worked with KISS and most recently Ace's new
disc artwork. Mark currently has a
gallery of his pix on display at the ANDAZ HOTEL, which was the famous Hyatt House on
Sunset.
So that was a fun evening downtown, and I wish Ace the best on his new release. I really
enjoyed what I heard, and some stand out tracks for me are FOX ON THE RUN and GENGHIS
KHAN.
More news coming on my BK3 release and other events I have attended lately.

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley dropped his new CD this week, and in doing so, he solidifies his place as one of the coolest and most colorful characters rock music has ever seen. Titled Anomaly, it is the legendary musicians first solo album of all-new material since 1989s Trouble Walkin. And though the Frehley faithful surely would have liked to have had this record 15 years ago, having Frehley back with Kiss from 1996-2002 certainly helped take away some of the longing. Now, however, Ace is solo once again and is again reminding the hard-rock nation why he was in a group full of stars one of the most popular members of one of Americas most popular bands.
Ace Frehley, in simplest terms, is an ass-kicker. Hes an old-school guitar god. And his new sound is big. Very big. The guitars scream. The riffs are infectious. Its a little Clapton, a little Page and a little Hendrix, yet with a modern edge and explosive production.
And it sounds better loud.
The CDs opening track, Foxy & Free, is also one of the albums best tracks. Here, Frehley glides and grinds through a gritty groove and immediately sets the tone for what is to come: a very powerful, balls-out rock n roll album. Again, the guitars are torrid, with a fine sense of both flash and flair, and Frehley often cited as one of the most influential guitarists in rock history shows why hes earned such adulation.
Whether Frehleys influence on other musicians comes from his playing or the enormous popularity of Kiss or if its a combination of both doesnt really matter. The fact is, he is often hailed as a hero by younger rock disciples, yet interestingly, whenever he has topped a readers poll in some music magazine, or has placed in the Top 10 and is named one the rocks all-time best guitarists, he usually quips:
If Id have known I was going to be such an influence, I would have practiced more.
Self-deprecating? Yes. Funny? Sure. But also completely irrelevant.
Technique and innovation arent why rock fans like Frehleys playing. Its his style. Its his touch. Hes a natural. And on Anomaly, the licks are both vintage and vibrant.
With the churning Outer Space, Frehley embraces his Spaceman legacy from his time with Kiss, but with a distinctly modern style. And Pain In The Neck comes with a ferocious musical breakdown midway through the song that again flexes the playing prowess of Frehley and his bandmates, who once again include the great Anton Fig, known best for his work on The Late Show with David Letterman.
A terrific cover of Sweets Fox On The Run is another highlight. The original song actually predates Frehleys fame yet sounds as if it was written with him in mind. Sometimes you hear a cover of a famous song, done by another famous artist, and it makes perfect sense. Such is the case of Ace Frehley singing and ripping away on Fox On The Run.
With the pounding Genghis Khan, Frehley treads some new musical waters. The song, unlike anything Frehley has recorded before, offers a trippy-Beatles-meets-gritty-Aerosmith vibe and is a welcomed departure for the spaceman. Of course, he also spices it with some tasty Hendrix-like guitars and some Led Zeppelin thump. In some ways, its a complete combination of all of Frehleys own major influences, yet once again, done in a very 2009 style.
Change The World also offers a slight departure for Frehley, both lyrically and musically. Though describing the song as political might be going too far, it does offer a hopeful look at the world around us. And, musically, it comes with some clever time changes that again reveal Frehleys growth as a musician. Space Bear, a scorching instrumental, again displays Frehleys fretboard wizardry, and Kiss fans will get a kick out of its title, taken from a famous 1979 television interview with the late Tom Snyder in which an apparently intoxicated Frehley had both the host and the rest of the band on edge, and at times, in stitches.
With Sister, Frehely again puts his guitars on display, and with Its A Great Life, he leans more towards a pop sound that gives the CD a nice touch. The album closes, as is Frehleys tradition, with a moving instrumental, Fractured Quantum.
The release date of Anomaly comes, fittingly, on the third anniversary of Frehleys sobriety, and the mostly acoustic A Little Below The Angels seems to celebrate his new place in life. The musician has been on and off the wagon for years, but this time, it looks like hes staying on. And perhaps thats the best news of all for fans of this iconic yet highly lovable legend. Frehley fans not only love his music, but they also root for him to stay straight. They understand that his sometimes erratic behavior drove Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons nuts, yet also know that Kiss would often indulge him because of his incredible popularity with fans and what he can bring to the table as a guitarist and even as a vocalist.
With Anomoly, all we get is the good stuff. The ass kicker. The old-school guitar god. Style. Touch. Flash and flair.
Ace Frehley at his very best.

THE
RETURN OF THE SPACEMAN
(from nrk.no)
Original Kiss-guitarist Ace Frehley celebrates being three years sober as he releases his
first album in 20 years.
The former Kiss-axeman last released a solo-album, «Trouble Walkin'», in 1989. Since
then, he has toured with former bandmate Peter Criss, rejoined Kiss, recorded and toured
with Kiss, left Kiss for the second time and once again battled alcoholism.
But this week Ace Frehley returns with a vengeance, releasing his new album «Anomaly»
two weeks before his old band returns with their first record in 11 years, «Sonic Boom».
On the day of release, NRKs Roy Hilmar Svendsen sat down with the original Spaceman for a chat on all things «Anomaly», his daily battle with his old demons, touring, old songs.
And yes, of course, Tommy Thayer.
NRK: Congratulations on your new album, «Anomaly». The day is finally here, after 20 years. How does it feel?
ACE: It feels wonderful! Its been a lot of long hours
in the studio, some nervous moments when I couldnt find someone right to mix the
album, frustrations and all that. But thats behind me now. Im very happy with
the end result, and Im thrilled. Im very excited about unleashing it to the
world today.

GENE
SIMMONS SAYS KISS DELIVERING MOST VALUE FOR MONEY
(from therockradio.com)
Gene Simmons says that as always Kiss delivers more bang for your buck -- and the band's
upcoming North American tour is no exception. The tour ties in the band' first new studio
album in over a decade, called Sonic Boom, and kicks off at Detroit's Cobo Arena -- where
their 1975 classic breakthrough album Alive! was originally recorded -- over two nights on
September 25th and 26th.
Simmons says that once again the band has spared no expense on the costumes, lights,
screens and sound system for the upcoming trek: "New outfits, brand new stage,
millions more put into it -- that's the history of Kiss. Simply put, any band you go to
see for the same ticket price, y'know, Kiss is gonna give you tenfold more. That's just a
statement of fact. And there's a new screen, state-of-the-art; I don't think people have
seen this kind of thing before -- that's literally as wide as the entire stage. So, there
ain't a bad seat in the house."

"ANOMALY" 20 YEARS IN THE MAKING
(from fox6now.com)
Guns 'N Roses has nothing on Ace Frehley when it comes to lengthy album delays. The 17
years it took to finish "Chinese Democracy" was generally considered the gold
standard of rock 'n' roll procrastination.
Until now.
The former Kiss guitarist took 20 years to finish "Anomaly," his fourth solo
studio album and first since 1989's "Trouble Walkin' "
And yes, it was worth the wait.
In between a five-year Kiss reunion and recurring battles with the bottle, Frehley picked
away at his new album, emerging with a disc that evokes the sprit and fire of his
self-titled 1978 solo album. That disc was the most successful of the four Kiss solo
albums that were simultaneously released, and the only one to spawn a hit single in
"New York Groove."
He kicks things off with "Foxy And Free," an in-your-face rocker that packs a
powerful punch. The next track, "Outer Space," plays on his role as the Spaceman
in Kiss, and adds a heavier bottom groove.
Frehley serves up a smoking cover of Sweet's 1970s hit "Fox On The Run" that
starts with his trademark guitar toggle-switch noodling. "Space Bear," an ode to
the stuffed animal he sits atop his wall of Marshall amps in concert, is the best of three
instrumentals on the disc.
"Anomaly" shows why Frehley is one of the most influential guitarists in rock
history and why Kiss remains a pale imitation without him.
CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: "Sister," an unreleased track Frehley played on his 1995
solo tour, finally surfaces on an album in all its thunderous, dissonant glory.

BOOM ALBUM REVIEW
(from kisskollector.com)
The news of KISS releasing a brand new album next month, came as a big surprise to
probably each and every KISS fan out there - especially after all the years that Paul
Stanley and Gene Simmons stated they weren't interested in doing a new album. But when the
43 minute new album - produced by Paul Stanley - will be out early next month, the biggest
surprise for the fans will be that this time the band in fact put their money where their
mouth is: it really is the best KISS album in 30 years! Here at KISS Kollector Fanclub, we
even think it might grow to be the best KISS album ever (it's already in our personal top
3 of best ever KISS albums).

THIS IS
ROCK'N ROLL
(from dailyiowan.com)
Ace Frehley: Anomaly
****1 / 2 out of *****
Anomaly is Ace Frehleys first new album in more than 20 years, so fans and newcomers alike are going to wonder, Is there any way in hell it can possibly be good?
The answer is a full blown YES. This album rocks more than any CD I have heard in a long while. Space Ace deserves to be commended for what he has done with this record Anomaly is rock n roll in its purest form, and that is something that few newer bands or musicians can emulate.
Frehley has been labeled a guitar god, and this album proves why. Opening track Foxy & Free sounds like it could have been a 70s radio hit with its groovin guitar lines and free-spirited vocals. Longtime fans will notice that Frehleys vocals have significantly improved since earlier records. Whether its studio voodoo magic or the result of his putting down the cold bottle of gin, it doesnt matter, because everything about the track works effortlessly.
Outer Space has been available for online download, and the recorded version sounds every bit as amazing as when I first heard the song via Internet weeks ago. Heavy guitars and eerie harmonies combine to make a memorable tune. Pain in the Neck explodes with more loud riffs and has lyrics reflecting on a past relationship.
Fox on the Run is a cover of a track originally recorded by Sweet in the 70s, and it complements the old-school vibe of the album. Sister is another song that will have people remembering the times when Frehley wore his makeup and shiny silver costume in KISS with its explosive guitar solos.
Guitar enthusiasts will be pleased by the numerous instrumental tracks on the album. Genghis Khan features some of Frehleys finest guitar work ever. Space Bear and Fractured Quantum are full of the emotion and energy that made his original 1978 solo album so amazing.
If I have one problem with Anomaly, it is the cheesy kid vocals in the acoustic A Little Below the Angels, but at least it seems sincere.
Anomaly is one of the best albums to come out this year, and it proves that Frehley still deserves his legendary status.
Erics Picks: Foxy & Free, Outer Space, Pain in the Neck, Genghis Khan

REVIEW: ACE FREHLEY - ANOMALY
(from gearsofrock.com)
The original Spaceman lead guitarist of the legendary Kiss lineup serves up a platter of
12 new tracks on his first solo effort since 1989s Trouble Walkin.
On Anomaly, Ace Frehley refreshingly sticks to his classic 70s roots
keeping all of the fundamentals of hard rock prominent.
Frehleys guitars come out in a chugging blaze from the very beginning of
Foxy and Free continuing into Outer Space, while the drums of
Anton Fig (David Letterman) and Scott Coogan (Brides of Destruction) bring the thunder.
Almost all of the material on this album is hard rock in its most natural state with
traces of melodic moments spread throughout (Pain in the Neck). Frehley
pays tribute to 70s British rock band Sweet with a rendition of Fox on the
Run that stays very true to the original performance. A Little Below the
Angels is an honest acoustic ballad from a recovering alcoholics perspective.
Genghis Khan is mainly an instrumental stomp rock tune with the random lyric
so long Genghis Khan, now your gone, so long thrown in here and there, unlike
Space Bear and Fractured Quantum, which are completely
instrumental.
All in all, Anomaly does not piss me off one bit and it should not piss
anyone off. The riffs are hard, heavy, in some cases epic (Space Bear), and
better than anything that Kiss has released in the last 20 years. -Meds

FORMER KISS GUITARIST ACE FREHLEY RELEASES FIRST
ALBUM IN 20 YEARS
(from Reuters Blogs)
Posted by: Dean Goodman
These are heady times for KISS fans. The hard-rock band is gearing up for the Oct. 6
release of its first album in 11 years, Sonic Boom, and will hit the road to
mark the 35th anniversary of its breakthrough concert album Alive!
And then theres the bands former guitarist, Ace Frehley, who on Tuesday will
release his first solo album in 20 years, Anomaly. The date is also
significant because it marks his third year of sobriety.
But dont look for the two camps to work out some cross-promotion efforts. Frehley
was asked during a fan Q&A at the Grammy Museum on Monday whether he would join KISS
on stage for the first time since he left the band in 2002. (He first left the band 20
years earlier.)
I havent gotten a call, Frehley said to laughter. Im not
holding my breath. They took one road, I decided to take another. Its a little late
in the game for me.
Instead, Frehley has a busy concert schedule: Japan and Australia next month, followed by
dates in the United States, and then probably a complete worldwide tour next
year.
Frehley, 58, said it took so long to issue a follow-up to 1989s Trouble
Walkin because I just didnt have my act together at certain points
on my life. He had hoped to start making an album in 1995, but was invited to
participate in the KISS worldwide reunion tour, which ran from 1996 until 2002.
I got off that tour and was ready to blow my brains out, he said. It
took me a while to get my head screwed on straight. I went into outer space for a while
came back.
Frehley frequently compared the new album to his self-titled 1978 solo debut. Each member
of KISS released a solo album on the same day. Frehley said his sold the best.
Among the tracks on Anomaly is the tune A Little Below the Angels,
in which he recounts his hellraising days and efforts to improve his ways. Everybody
knows I had a drinking problem for many years, he explained. I can laugh about
it now.
Frehley, sporting dark shades at the evening event, seemed in good spirits, delighting his
fans with the occasional bons mots. A small selection:
- Im not a schooled musician. I dont know how to read music. A lot of
the chords I play, I dont even know what theyre called.
- Ill never forget, when Paul (Stanley) came up with (the 1979 disco hit) I
Was Made For Lovin You, I know we lost a lot of fans on that one
and I was
one of the fans.
- There was a lot of commitment to excellence (when KISS made records). I just
didnt always show up.

"Several years ago... Paul and I embarked on making a motion picture
together, and that picture has been considered a classic. We have been honored by being
selected to win a 2009 Classic Gold Telly Award," said Antonelli. He added,
"This is Paul's first time seeing [the awards,] and I think he's just an amazing
artist and an amazing man. The opportunity to make this film with him and present him with
these awards means the world to me, and to share it with him, of course, is an
honor."
"That's a great surprise!" Stanley said, admiring the dual statuettes, adding,
"Awesome... we did it!"
Producers Paul Stanley & Louis Antonelli both received the Classic Gold Telly Awards,
which are presented to film & video productions that are considered to be the finest
in the 30 year history of the Telly Awards.
Founded in 1978, the Telly is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional and

OSHAWA
TICKETS SNAPPED UP
(from torontosun.com)
Tickets to rock and roll all night with
KISS in Oshawa have sold out.
The GM Centre's box office phone line confirmed today that all the tickets for the Oct. 7 concert are gone.
"Every single, solitary, last one is gone," Oshawa city councillor Robert Lutczyk told the Sun today. "Everything, not one is left."
Tickets went on sale to the general public this morning at 10 a.m. The centre was expected to hold around 5,600 people for the concert.
Members of the KISS ARMY and GM Centre's Backstage Pass were able to take advantage of pre-sales earlier this week but Lutczyk said he's heard every batch of tickets went like hot cakes.
"They all went in minutes," he said. "There was a huge demand for these things."
At least 100 fans spent two days lined up outside the GM Centre waiting for tickets. Early this morning, the line had grown to a few hundred.
"I doubt that the 10th person in line got tickets," Lutczyk said.
The Oshawa concert, a special premiere of the band's new album Sonic Boom, has been a long time in the making.
Fans flooded an online contest to put Oshawa at the top of the list for a fan-routed tour.
When the tour dates were announced in the summer, Canada's Motor City wasn't on the list. That led to a public outcry and a quick announcement by the band the next day that they would perform in Oshawa in October.
KISS frontman Gene Simmons blamed the media for the perceived 'Shwa snub.
"I'm really pissed off at the media for creating this
nonsense," Simmons said in an interview with The Canadian Press in August. "Now
the story's going to come out as a kind of, 'Gene is complaining about the media' (story)
-- you're goddamn right I am."

STANLEY INTERVIEW ON WGN NEWS, CHICAGO
(from YouTube/OfficialKISSOnline)
Paul talks about the new tour, Sonic Boom, and his artwork on Chicago's WGN news.
Click here to see the interview.
How did you get involved with "Extract"?
"They called up and said, 'You play an a - - hole LA lawyer.' I said, 'I'm
in.' They said, 'Do you want to see a script?' I said, 'No.' "
What do you think of lawyers?
"I'm pro- our lawyers, but I hate your lawyers. I don't like ambulance chasers
very much. I tried to be as big of an a - - hole as I could be because this guy is an
ambulance chaser."
What's your philosophy of life?
"My mother is actually the most sound existential philosopher I've ever met.
Her point of view is more profound than Kierkegaard or Nietzsche. She says, 'Every day
you're above ground is a good day.' "
Are you a Mike Judge fan?
"Of course. 'Beavis and Butthead' was a game changer. You actually saw a
cartoon of people I've seen all my life. It's not the highest life form on planet Earth,
but they are who they are. They're profoundly honest in their skin. They can be stupid and
racist and all of that, but the animal resembles the skin he's in."
Your next album is being released through Wal-Mart.
"They're terrific. They give 21?2 million people jobs. It's like America. Not
everybody loves America. Say, 'America,' and see what happens. Nobody loves it like
immigrants, and I am one [from Israel]. You don't know what you've got till it's gone. My
mother was in a concentration camp at age 14. That's a big perspective. That'll stop all
the bulls - - t."
What do you think of the current political
leadership?
"Means well, lacks experience. And that's dangerous. I voted for President
Obama, but his healthcare plan is a complete disaster. When I was growing up, it was 'Make
Love, Not War,' and that's great, but what if the other side wants to make war?"
Speaking of war, you must have friends in Israel who
are worried about Iran.
"I'm not worried, and neither are they. If it ever came to it, they'd know
what to do."
What movie role would you most like to do?
"God. Like in the George Burns movie. I should have been God."

I have the final product with artwork of the entire new Ace Frehley album now. Ace showed
me the cover art a couple months ago in my studio.
Its cool to see it in the final product. The packaging is really cool. Its a
cardboard sleeve that assembles into a pyramid. It also has a small Ace poster in it,
credits and a cardboard oversleeve.
In an total class move Ace dedicates the CD to the late Eric Carr and Dimebag
Darrell. Dime was obviously a huge Ace fan and had his image tattooed on his chest. No
doubt Dime would be floored by this to say the least! As for Eric, it is just awesome that
Ace kept him in his thoughts like this and kept his memory alive by listing his name right
on the back of the CD. So many times people say they will keep someones memory alive after
they pass and forget to do so. Ace did not forget and if you had the pleasure of knowing
Eric you would know why. He was a special guy and I still think of him all the time. Even
though Ace and Eric were only in Kiss together for a short time they really did bond. So
much so that when I started working with Ace in the late 80's Eric would often come to
rehersals and jam. He actually wanted to tour with Ace at one point just before he got
sick but that would not fly with the Kiss camp. Eric was the best and its so cool of Ace
to have done this.
The back jacket is kind of layed out like his '78 album. At the top it is also
dedicated to Ace's family, friends and fans. Inside the package folds out with more
credits and the poster. Ace writes the "thank yous" in a personal way, noting
it's been 20 years since a solo album. As I've said many times the light went on big time
for Ace a few years ago when he got sober. He is a changed man for the better and
understands his past mistakes. To that end he also thanks "Paul, Gene & Peter,
for putting up with my insanity through all the years". He also thanks Peter for
doing a song about him on his solo CD, and thanks yours truly as well as many more. Just a
great very personal package and reconnect to his fan base and another reason why you
should buy CDs not downloads.
As for the music itself I have already played two tracks from the album and will
premiere more this weekend and next. My favorite tracks include "Sister" (by the
way, the killer drum track on this song is Scott Coogan, not Anton Fig), opener "Foxy
& Free", "Too Many Faces", "Change The World", "A Little
Below The Angels" and "Its a Great Life". This album is very dynamic in
direction. Its all rock and all Ace, but it also has two instrumentals and a song called
Genghis Kahn which is almost an instrumental. Great guitar solos on this one. There's all
out crushers and then more Beatles type of things, but still with the Ace edge and sound.
Ace also references in some songs his past mistakes and how he is a changed guy.
Most of the songs are written by Ace only, with a few co-writers and of course the
Sweet cover. Throughout his voice sounds better than ever and his playing is solid, all
due to the fact he is sober without a doubt. Having worked on every Ace solo album
(besides the '78 album) this is the first he has done totally sober and it shows.
If you are an Ace fan you will love this album when it comes out 9/15. I just spoke
to him and he will be on my shows soon. He is basing in LA right now and is doing a warm
up show at The Viper Room on 9/12 (sold out). A tour is in the works. I am proud of the
album my good friend has made for us fans, and even more proud of how he has turned his
life around. Welcome back Space Ace!

NEW KISS:
SONIC BOOM, OR BUST?
(from vancouver.24hrs.ca)
What didn't go into KISS's new album
Sonic Boom seems almost as important to Gene Simmons as what did.
"There are no ballads," the demon bassist growls down the phone from L.A. when asked about the band's first studio disc since 1998's Psycho Circus. "There are no keyboards. There are no synths. There are no girl background singers."
Of course, there's also no Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. But a lack of original members didn't stop Gene and longtime partner Paul Stanley from taking an old-school, back-to-basics approach to their 19th album.
The disc is due for release Oct. 6. While we can't agree with Gene that it's the best KISS album in 30 years, it's definitely their strongest work in two decades. Here's a song-by-song preview:
Modern Day Delilah
3:37
A funky guitar lick straight from the
1970s hooks up with an 1980s arrangement and a big chorus for a killer opener voiced by
Paul. "Yeah, yeah!" are his first words. No argument here.
Russian Roulette 4:32
Gene steps up to the mic on a
gear-shifting stomper anchored by his grinding bass, dripping with his usual lascivious
lyrics, and graced with a smoking Tommy Thayer solo. Two aces in a row.
Never Enough 3:27
Another outsized 1980s hair-metal
arena-rocker from Paul -- but from the slinky guitars and bare-bones beat to Stanley's
high-register vocals, it works. Three for three.
Yes I Know (Nobody's
Perfect) 3:03
Gene's turn again -- and he dishes up a
classic power-chord glam-slam that wouldn't have been out of place on Dressed to Kill. The
best song so far. And that's saying something.
Stand 4:50
Stanley and Simmons share the mic on a
bombastically overblown stadium-rock anthem to solidarity and perseverance. It's even
cornier than it sounds. The only stumble so far.
Hot and Cold 3:37
Simmons gets the disc back on track with a
punchy 1970s-style cowbell rocker in the mold of Dr. Love. "Baby, feel my tower of
power," leers Gene. Another wicked solo from Thayer.
All For the Glory 3:49
Drummer Eric Singer -- who wears Criss'
gear and handles his tunes onstage -- shows off his raspy vocal prowess on this solidly
driving number.
Danger Us 4:23
Another classic riff -- there's a bit of
God of Thunder in there, but faster and more fiery -- along with another wailing vocal
from Paul. The punny chorus is the only drawback.
I'm an Animal 3:47
Armed with a lumbering beat and a
swaggering Zep-like guitar lick, Gene bellows out a dinosaur-stomper reminiscent of War
Machine and I Love it Loud.
When Lightning Strikes
3:45
As his reward for all his blistering
Frehley-style fretwork, Thayer gets the vocal spotlight on this chunk of power-chord
cowbell-plonk rock.
Say Yeah 4:27
The guitars go from jangly to chugging and
Paul plays with some echoing vocals on this Tears Are Falling-like closing anthem. You
wanted the best? This time, you actually got it.

KISS AND
SAY HELLO
(from billboard.com)
Kiss ends a 10-year absence from
Billboard's rock airplay charts, as "Modern Day Delilah" debuts at No. 26 on the
Heritage Rock survey (viewable every other week in the print issue of Billboard magazine).
Not a bad birthday present for the legendary group's Gene Simmons, who turned 60 last week
(Aug. 25). (Paul Stanley celebrates the same milestone Jan. 20).
Kiss' Billboard chart history dates to April 20, 1974, when its self-titled set first
appeared on the Billboard 200. The act will log its 33rd charting title following the Oct.
6 release of the Walmart exclusive "Sonic Boom," the band's first offering of
new material this decade.
Kiss' last album, 1998's "Psycho Circus," became its highest-charting on the
Billboard 200 (No. 3) and produced its first airplay chart No. 1. The title cut led
Heritage Rock for four weeks and Mainstream Rock for one frame.
In a press release, Simmons sticks to the group's trademark understated and unassuming
nature. "'Sonic Boom' may be the best new record we've done since (1976's)
'Destroyer'! It is 'Rock and Roll Over' meets 'Love Gun.' The world's biggest retailer had
better get ready for the hottest band in the world and hire more cashiers before October
6th!"

KISS -
SONIC BOOM
(from Classic Rock Magazine)
Kiss and hyperbole go hand in hand. Always have done, always will. Gene Simmons is talking
about this album like it's his second coming -which will doubtless please the insatiable
ladies in the, er, Ladies Room. Paul Stanley has got in the act too, calling Sonic Boom
the best record Kiss have made in 30 years - putting it on a par with 1979's illustrious
Dynasty.
Of course, you can trust us at Classic Rock to boldly cut through the bluster and reveal
the brutal, honest truth. And our verdict is... we agree. Sonic Boom is bloody brilliant.
Kiss's first new studio album in 11 years delivers the goods in spectacular fashion. It's
like waiting for a Tesco van to turn up outside your home and instead a Chieftain tank
arrives, packed full of fillet steaks. If you read our preview on the Classic Rock
website, you'll doubtless remember the comment: 'Kiss seem to have combined the best of
all their eras into a single winning package.'
So you get echoes of Rock And Roll Over - where the Flash Four added a neat commercial
sheen to their hard rockin' sensibilities - in the music as well as the album cover. Hints
of the sprawling grandeur of Creatures Of The Night. Tinges of the chest-thumping teaze of
Crazy Nights. So it goes on.
Yet Sonic Boom is no determinedly retro package. It's purely the sound of Kiss playing to
their strengths.
Kicking off in scintillating style with "Modern Day Delilah," what's evident
immediately is the level of commitment from rhythm guitarist/vocalist Stanley. Sonic Boom
probably wouldn't have happened if the Starchild hadn't pulled the strings (leaving Gene
dangling underneath the lighting rig) and on...Delilah Stanley sings his platform soles
off. Simmons sounds refreshed too, carving out his personaility on "Russian
Roulette" and "I'm An Animal" with the sensitivity of a tattooist wielding
a rusty steak-knife. Put simply, the Demon is back to his lascivious best.
There's no Ace or Peter, of course. We never thought we'd write the following, but... we
don't miss 'em. Guitarist Tommy Thayer puts in a remarkable performance - akin to Eddie
Van Halen replicating Frehley licks - and Thayer's showcase song, "When Lightning
Strikes," isn't half bad either. Ditto drummer Eric Singer, whose playing is
impeccable, and whose singing on the chundering "All For The Glory" is every bit
as good as Criss's on "Black Diamond."
Standouts? Well, Stand is a 21st century "God Gave Rock And Roll To You," no
doubt about it; "Danger Us" is the sort of throwaway classic you thought Kiss
had forgotten how to write; and "Say Yeah" is perhaps the most triumphal album
closer of all time.
In a world without heroes, thank God Kiss are alive and licking once again.
9/10
