WHEN KISS
WAS (KINDA) COOL: THE ELDER
(from dogmaticblog.com)
In 1981, it was looking to be all over
for KISS. After the release of the disastrous (but oh so amazing) Bob Ezrin produced The
Elder album, the band was facing the prospect of a commercial failure.
In a last ditched effort, manager Bill Aucoin and the KISS
publicist office, were desperate for any press.
In this series of photos, Gene and Paul visit a hospital.

KISS GO
BIGGER, LOUDER WITH "SONIC BOOM" AND ALIVE 35 TOUR
(from Tennessean.com)
Fans that got a kick out of the last three decades will likely be giddy over 2009.
Not only did KISS get nominated for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in September, but the band released Sonic Boom KISS first album of new material in about 11 years and embarked on Alive 35, a tour singer Paul Stanley says dwarfs everything theyve done previously. And for the first time in their careers, the bands efforts are earning critical plaudits, too.
Quite honestly I find myself shaking my head, Stanley says. Ive made a career out of not getting those reviews, and all of a sudden we are universally and consistently getting rave reviews. Weve always had this massive fan following, and that has certainly been the lifeblood of what we do. Maybe the reason were getting good reviews now is because all the KISS fans have now become critics.
KISS fans can catch the Alive 35 tour at Nashvilles Sommet Center on Wed., Oct. 28. This year marks the 35th anniversary of KISS first tour, and Stanley says the show is packed with all the hit songs and over-the-top elements fans have come to expect.
If we could call this tour anything, we would call it
bigger, better, more, the singer says. Anything you like that
weve done, theres more of it.

ROCKS A-STAGE AT HDSTUDIOS
(from shootonline.com)
Southfield, MI, October 26, 2009 |
SHOOT Publicity Wire | --- Legendary rockers KISS recently stormed into 'Detroit Rock
City' in September 2009. While in town, the foursome paid a visit to hdstudios' A-Stage to
shoot a new music video with production company Merge/Crossroads. hdstudios is a division
of Grace & Wild, Inc.
The band was in town to open the U.S. portion of its "KISS Alive 35" tour at
Cobo Arena in Detroit on Friday, September 18. They came to hdstudios the day prior, to
shoot footage for a music video for their new single, "Modern Day Delilah".
Merge/Crossroads captured green screen footage of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer
and Eric Singer walking through a miniaturized CGI version of Detroit. They towered over
buildings and walked around the city, passing Detroit landmarks such as the Renaissance
Center and the People Mover.

TIM CRICH
(from rockpages.gr)
We continue our KISS special feature with the 42nd interview of a KISS-related
figure. This week, KISS engineer, Tim Crich, remembers the recordings of
Animalize! Heres an excerpt:
Rockpages.gr: Paul Stanley was clearly the one who handled the majority of the
production work (for Animalize), because Gene was busy doing the
"Runaway" movie. What do you remember from Paul Stanley and what kind of a
person really is? Did you have the chance to meet other KISS members (I know that you have
met Gene several times)?
Tim Crich: Paul Stanley is the epitome of the term Rock Star. Paul is so totally
confident, that it allows him to relax and be a nice guy. He has that aura of Rock star,
and, while he knows it and knows how and when to wield it, he was able to hang out and
laugh with everyone. He loaned me one of his guitars once, so I am indebted to him. Gene
made it clear that KISS was a job. They put in the hours, take a wage, and have a pension,
like any other corporation. And that is what KISS is. A corporation with products to
sell
Paul does his job very well.

INTERVIEW
WITH PAUL STANLEY
(from Metal Hammer via
Kissonline)
By Tim Grierson
KISS have been the godfathers of good-time rock for 35 years. Having unleashed their best
album in years, they're still not ready to hang up their platform boots. Paul Stanley
explains how they're showing the pretenders how it's done.
Paul Stanley is a man in perpetual motion. At 57, he and his bandmates in KISS are days
away from the next leg of the group's seemingly never-ending Alive 35 tour, and he's so
consumed with last-minute details that he had to postpone our initial interview in Los
Angeles to focus on rehearsals before catching a flight to Detroit, where the band will
kick off the tour. Later, relaxing in the band's Motor City hotel, KISS's venerable
guitarist and vocalist takes a moment to reflect on the group's recent record-breaking
concert tallies.
"In the last year," he says, "we played to about a million people. Our tour
of Europe was our biggest and most successful ever. We did 30 shows in about three months
and played probably to about three-quarters of a million people. And then after that, we
did the stadiums of South America, playing to somewhere between 30,000 and 80,000 people a
night. And then we went on to Canada and did 15,000 to 90,000 people a night. It's been a
terrific year for us."

GETTING
TO KNOW YOU WITH ERIC SINGER
(from roadrunnerrecords.co.uk)
Next up in the Getting To Know You series we sit down with Eric
from rock legends KISS. What a great guy he was!!
What were you doing when we interupted you to do this?
I was eating in the other room actually some chicken quesadilla, with my shoes off, relaxing.
Date of Birth?
May 12th
Where did you go to high school?
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and I went to High School on the
east side of Cleveland. At that time it was in the Seventies and I was lucky to grow up in
a cool time of music and culturally, at least in America. It was a typical mid western
town but Clevelands a real rock n roll city its where the rock n roll fame is at. It
was a great place, very open minded- I mean as regards to music (not so much culturally
with people), but when it comes to music people just really loved rock n roll there,
always have and what we looked forward to was buying records every week or going to a
show. I saw so many great concerts in my formative years as a kid so Im glad I grew
up there. It was a great place to grow up, no doubt about it.

SEALED
WITH A KISS
(from miamiherald.com)
Get ready to rock and roll all night -- KISS is back.
The veteran rockers' ``Alive 35'' world tour is an homage to KISS Alive, the double album that rocketed the guys to global fame in the mid-'70s.
At Thursday night's BankAtlantic Center concert, the always kinetic foursome -- with founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons still at the helm -- will play fan favorites, plus a song or two from Sonic Boom, their first studio album since 1998's Psycho Circus. We spoke to Stanley, 57, about how they keep it going after 35 years:
How many songs from the new album are you doing?
``We didn't want to do songs people didn't know, but here you are the No. 2 album in the country and obviously people are getting to know these songs. They had to sound great live because we recorded them live. Music isn't supposed to be made under a microscope. Everything we did was on the first or second take. If it's perfect, it's not rock 'n' roll.''
How has your songwriting changed?
``To write great music you almost have to debrief yourself. Technical ability can sometimes get in the way. All the great early songs were written really quickly, without overanalyzing every verb and adverb.''
Were you pleased with the outcome?
``What I wanted to get on this album was that same vitality and that same energy that I think had been lacking. From the get-go, the first rule was no outside writers. The idea of bringing someone in to do the work for you, to interpret who you are, is a problem.''
What sets `Sonic Boom' apart?
``This time it was more important to make a great album. You can't make a great album with people in the band saying, How can the band make me more famous? Instead of: How can I make the band more famous? This album is about people who believe in the band.''
How different would it be today to accomplish what you did in the '70s?
``MTV and the Web made the world a much smaller place. Now a band in Boise can see what a band in Prague is doing and copy it.''
What is different about this show?
``It's huge: bigger, better, more. We have
incredible video screens built into speaker cabinets, bombs, flash pots, smoke. What
you've come to expect. It is, by far, the best show we've ever done.''

KISS
KOMPENDIUM
(from Kissonline)
In '77, blood from each member of the rock band KISS was drawn by a registered nurse and
poured into vats of red ink used for printing the band's first comic book. It was created
by Marvel legend Stan Lee and was the beginning of a hugely successful KISS comic book
franchise. All are now out of print.
Now, for the first time, the KISS Kompendium combines the most breathtaking KISS comic
books into a lush oversized collector's compilation. Brought to life by graphic
illustrations as riveting and hardcore as the band's real-life fire-breathing line-up, the
Demon (Gene Simmons), Starchild (Paul Stanley), and the other band members' superhero
alter egos defeat evil in over 1200 pages of stunning KISS comics!
This is a book authorized by KISS. KISS founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley
have contributed the forewords to this. The book also includes exclusive never-before-seen
backstage photos from KISS' newest tour along with commentary by the band-members.
This is a must-have for every KISS fan eagerly awaiting the band's new album, their first
in over 10 years, and a perfect holiday gift for comic-book lover to pour over time and
time again.
This title will be released on November 24, 2009.

ACE ADDS
SHOW IN SWEDEN
(from Niclas Olsson/Kiss Army
Sweden)
While some men feel embarrassed because of "this macho crap," Criss said surviving breast cancer -- yes, men get it, too -- was actually a blessing. He was treated before the tumor could spread and said he's speaking about male breast cancer now -- during National Breast Cancer Awareness month -- to raise the profile of this rare disease.
Criss, who played drums for KISS and was known as "Catman," offered this advice to men who spot lumps in their breast: "Don't sit around playing Mr. Tough Guy. Don't say 'It's going to go away.' It might not and you might not see life anymore and how beautiful that is."
The 63-year-old musician is now cancer free.
Like many others, Criss wasn't aware men could get breast cancer.
"Even though we don't think of men as
having breasts, they have breast tissue and are susceptible to getting breast
cancer," said Dr. Sharon Giordano, an associate professor of medicine in the
department of breast medical oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer
Center in Houston. She is not involved in Criss' care.

CASABLANCA
RECORDS CO-FOUNDER DISCUSSES HIS EARLY DAYS WITH KISS
(from noisecreep.com)
Casablanca Records was one of the most successful labels during the 1970s. In terms of
disco, they had no real competition with acts like the Village People and
Donna Summer on their roster. But it was their 1973 signing of Kiss that
helped fund the label's later foray into disco -- and later, feature films.
Much has been written about Casablanca Records during the years, but a new book has just
hit store shelves that tells the label's story from the inside. Written by former label
vice president Larry Harris, 'And Party Every Day: The Inside Story of Casablanca Records'
is a firsthand account of the company's glory days, told with unflinching honesty and
detail.
Noisecreep caught up with Harris and asked him about his and the label's early days with
Kiss.
Can you talk about the first time you saw Kiss play at their audition for the
label? Was it as magical as their hardcore fans would expect?
It was definitely not anything like that for me (laughter). First off, I had to get over
the loudness of the band. We were all crammed in this little rehearsal room in Manhattan,
and here they were playing at full volume. I'm a promotions guy so the first thing I
thought about was, "How the hell are we going to sell this band?" I was taught
in the business that you just have to find a way to get your records played, and sometimes
you have to psyche yourself into it. I had to get past how loud they were in there that
day and start thinking of ways to push them.

Q &
A: GENE SIMMONS
(from 2.macleans.ca)
The Kiss bassist on his ego, his Playmate, his surprisingly normal kids, and his very
traditional parenting style.
Q: How is it that 35 years after your first album, youre bigger than ever?
A: I kiss the ground of the country I landed in, the United States of America. In totalitarian states, or religious states, or even in Europe, there are limitations, culturally and in other ways. The same guy, me, with the same talent and ambition, in Iran or Africait wouldnt work. So its the right thing at the right time in the right place, and the rest of it is luck and hard work. I approach everything I do as if its the only chance I will ever be given and the alternative is complete destitution.
Q: Your Wikipedia entry says, When Simmons was young, his mothers long absences while working two jobs in order to make ends meet left emotional scars that gave him a strong desire for wealth. Is that accurate?

PARTY, CASABLANCA STYLE: PART TWO
(from kissfaq.com)
KissFAQ: How dead on was Neils postscript of Casablanca as being a
profitless prosperity? What ultimately did the label in, and did the excess
really outweigh the success?
Larry Harris: What killed Casablanca was that a couple of guys who started a
record label although Neil had a lot more experience than I did never
thought the ride was going to end. It got to the point where we were so successful, we had
more gold and platinum albums than Warner Bros., Columbia and Capitol put together.
The thing that broke our back was the four KISS solo albums. I mean keep in mind, we were
also riding high with the movies with Midnight Express,
which won an Academy Award. We were doing really well but losing that much money on those
four albums at one time...Polygram cracked down on us. They owned half the company and
they distributed our product. And then disco started to fail. The Village People stopped
selling. And they did the worlds worst disco movie ever, Cant Stop The Music, what a piece of crap
(laughs). And that hurt them drastically. We had hit our high I think. We had already come
out with Robin Williams album, which was great. It sold a couple million copies. But
we were starting to go down hill.

KISS
STILL ROCKING AFTER 35 YEARS
(from BBC News)
Rock band Kiss are celebrating their 35th year in the music charts with the release
of their first studio album in nearly a decade, Sonic Boom.
The band, who formed in New York in 1973, have sold more than 80 million albums
worldwide.
"Kiss started as a dream of ours," explains Gene
Simmons, the band's bassist.
"All the bands we ever saw on stage played the hits we wanted to hear, but
were devastatingly poor in their visual live performance."

BRAD
SINSEL
(from rockpages.gr)
We continue our KISS special feature with the 41st interview of a KISS-related
figure. This week, War Babies singer, Brad Sinsel, turns back the hands of
time
approximately 17 years! Heres an excerpt:
Rockpages.gr: What do you remember from your collaboration with him?
Brad Sinsel: Ummm
I show up at his new huge house that had no furniture in
it except two chairs, and we just sat and played things we had back and forth till we
stumbled onto something we both felt we could sink our teeth into. Which ended up being a
song called 'Cry yourself to sleep' Tommy McMullin the War Babies guitar player had more
in common with Paul Stanley than I did coming from the point of view of Tommy being a KISS
fan as a kid, Tommy wrote 'Hang me up" with Paul. I personally never owned a KISS
doll.

RUMOUR
MILL: KISS #2 IN BILLBOARD CHARTS
(from hitsdailydouble.com)
Gene Simmons: First, I have to take you
back about 25 years ago. I noticed that musicians kept calling their guitars their
axes. They would say, I want to play my axe. I decided that
because of my persona, Id actually build a guitar that looks like an ax. You just
need to take one glance to know that this guitar looks so cool. Who doesnt want to
have the coolest looking guitar around? Seek and you shall find; ask and you shall
receive. I personally created this guitar, approved the electronics, the body type,
the design and even the wood. I even went to the trademark office of the U.S. Government
and now own the body type of the guitar and the word AxeBass because my guitar looks like
an ax.

FREHLEY: THE SPACEMAN LAUNCHES "ANOMALY"
(from goldminemag.com)
Ace is back, and when you get hit with the attack of his strident new record Anomaly,
youll realize that his couple of decades away from his solo career in earnest did
not constitute time wasted. Sure, Ace has been wasted more times than Def Leppard has
deferred to song doctors, but now clean and sober, hes found himself making strong
stadium-rock statements sure to trade punches with those on the Kiss album arriving in
October.
I thought it kind of went along with the kind of person I am, says Frehley,
asked about titling this titillating record with such a big word. Im the kind
of guy who thinks outside the box, whos been in all kinds of crazy situations, the
ups, the downs, and everywhere in-between. You know, the fact that Im still walking
around this earth, I must be an anomaly, right?

PARTY, CASABLANCA STYLE: PART ONE
(from kissfaq.com)
Larry
Harris: The KissFAQ Interview
Casablanca Records. It was the 1970s. It was a party every day. And then some.
The legendary record label was the vision of Neil Bogart, a man of many talents and a man
possessing a vivacious personality. Casablanca rode the wave of the decade to the top
through triumphs, failures, cash-flow problems, and gold and platinum albums all to
a backdrop of an era fueled by lavish excess, great music and creativity. Lest we forget,
it was also the label that took a chance on four makeup-wearing and leather-clad men from
New York.
Though a consummate leader and ultimate iconic industry figure, Bogart didnt do it
all alone. Enter Larry Harris, his cousin and the man who traveled westward with him to
get Casablanca off the ground and running, and who ultimately assumed the title of senior
vice president and managing director for the company.
In part one of a two-part interview, Harris shares with us his insight on Neil Bogart and
how he got his start at Casablanca, the importance of radio and television for KISS,
Angel, a Rush in Canada, what really broke KISS in Detroit Rock City, as well as artists
pissing out of windows, hanging with fugitives, and doing lines of white powder over
clown-white faces. After all, it was the 1970s.
So discard the MP3 player and smartphone, fire up some KISS vinyl and take a journey back
to the 70s with Larry Harris, author of And Party
Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records.
Lead guitarist Tommy Thayer, 48, grew up a KISS fan in the Portland, Ore., area.
As a child, he dressed up as original KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley for Halloween. A quarter-century later, he replaced Frehley as the bands main ax man.
"Ive been a fan of KISS since I was 13 years
old," Thayer said in a phone interview. "I discovered KISS when their first
record came out in 1974. I hadnt even started playing guitar yet. I saw a feature in
a magazine called Circus. I saw some live photos of KISS doing a performance, and
I thought, 'These guys look menacing! They had cool guitars and platform heels. I
got my first KISS album for Christmas in 1974, and I was on my way.

KISS,
BUBLE BATTLE FOR NO. 1 ON BILLBOARD 200
(from billboard.biz)
Next week's Billboard 200 chart will either house a first-ever No. 1 album from
iconic band Kiss, or pop singer Michael Buble may crash the group's rockin' party with his
new set, "Crazy Love."
Industry sources suggest that Kiss' new Wal-Mart exclusive album, "Sonic Boom,"
may shift somewhere between 160,000 and 180,000 copies in its first week. If the set sells
that much, it will also mark the group's best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began
tracking data in 1991.
Up against Kiss is Buble, who is releasing his new album on Oct. 9 to capitalize on his
appearance that day on the "Oprah Winfrey Show. Buble's last set -- 2007's
"Call Me Irresponsible" -- debuted at No. 2 (with 212,000 copies) before moving
to No. 1 the following week.
It's hard to believe that Kiss has never reached the top in its long career. All told, the
act has notched seven top 10 albums. Its highest charting set is 1998's
"Psycho-Circus," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 110,000 copies in its
first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The group's other high-charting sets include
1975's "Alive!" (No. 9), 1977's "Love Gun" (No. 4) and 1992's
"Revenge" (No. 6).

see the source of the warmth, only to discover the man standing behind her was urinating.
Security was called over and the guilty party was quickly escorted away and detained until

KISS'
SONIC GOES BOOM!!
(from hitsdailydouble.com)
KISS Wal-Mart
Exclusive Looks Headed for Top Spot Next Week
KISS their ass.
Gene Simmons has done it again. His Wal-Mart exclusive for the bands new Sonic Boom album, its first new studio effort in 11 years, is headed for between 150-175k in sales, giving the masked rockers a beeline on their first chart-topping release ever.
That's based on reports from those retailers out there who haven't packed up and moved to Boca Raton or begun to write a tell-all biography.
Showdog Nashvilles Toby Keith album American Ride is the next highest at 80-90k, though Reprise crooner Michael Bubles Crazy Love, which comes out this Friday (10/9) to coincide with the singers Oprah appearance, could also be in the mix.
Capitol Nashvilles Luke Bryan is next with 40-45k, along with Jive/JLGs Relient K and Backstreet Boys.
Malacos veteran gospel act BeBe & CeCe Winans appear headed for the 30-35k range, followed by Columbias Brandi Carlile (25-30k), Cherrytree/Interscopes Tokio Hotel (18-22k) and Atlantics Mayday Parade (18-22k).
The market was up 16% vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and still down 14% year to date.
You may now return to wondering if Paul
Shaffers sex life is anywhere nearly as interesting as Daves.

KISS
ENCOUNTER SOUND PROBLEMS IN TORONTO
(from bravewords.com)
KISS and BUCKCHERRY performed at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario last
night (October 2nd). BraveWords.com scribe Aaron Small was at the show and files this wild
report:
"Buckcherry begin their set with 'Tired Of You'. After playing for about 15 seconds,
the PA gives out completely!!! The band finishes the song with only stage sound, which we
could hear as our seats were really close to the stage. Obviously no vocals. The band
leaves the stage, obviously very frustrated, and it takes the crew 15 minutes to restore
power to the PA, so their set was cut short.
KISS begins their set with 'King Of The Night Time World'. They get half way through the
song and kaboom - the PA gives out again. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons are pissed! KISS
leaves the stage. It takes the crew another 15 minutes to rectify the problem. Thankfully,
KISS did not cut their set short. They played past the 11pm noise curfew until 11:15pm.
During Tommy Thayer's guitar solo, when he shot a rocket from the head of his guitar, it
hit the lighting rig, causing a rack of four lights to come crashing to the stage!!!"

FANZINE BOOK
Here are some pictures from the
new Kiss Fanzine book:
For a man who has spent the past 37 years wearing demonic
black-and-white makeup and singing "Love Gun" wearing leather pants and no
shirt, Stanley, 57, is pointedly serious on the phone. Asked about Casablanca Records, the
'70s disco label that broke KISS and was known for its executives' copious cocaine use and
excessive behavior, Stanley says he spent little time there. Asked about Ace Frehley, the fellow band founder
who spends much of his newfound solo career bashing KISS as sellouts in the press, Stanley
says he's just glad the guitarist is clean and sober. Asked what he wants for Christmas, Stanley delivers a
mini-lecture about supporting the American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

INTERVIEW
WITH PAUL STANLEY
The Winnipeg Sun did an interview with Paul Stanley.
Here is an excerpt:
You guys aren't kidding with the Alive! 35 tour -- the set list is almost identical
to the old album except for Firehouse and Rock Bottom. Why did you drop those?
We had to make sure we could include songs other than Alive! songs. We're doing a
marathon encore, and at some point, something's gotta give. And while those songs may be
considered classics to some, they're more obscure to others. Certainly Rock Bottom. We
were faced with a choice between Rock Bottom and Hotter Than Hell, and we chose the one
the audience sings along with.
Here's the tough question: That chest hair of your still
looks totally black. Do you dye or pluck?
If you saw me up close, you'd realize I'm human, as much as I would like to think
otherwise. You can't possibly be my age and be as black as stallion.

KISS FACES: IS IT THE
MASK OR THE MAN?
(from bostonherald.com)
If you squint your eyes at TD Garden on
Monday night, you might think youre watching the original incarnation of KISS.
But founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss wont be there. Both have
once again been bounced from the iconic band, replaced by longtime subs Tommy Thayer
(guitar) and Eric Singer (drums).
And for the first time in the bands 30-year history, the two newer dudes will
be donning the spaceman and cat makeup made famous by Frehley and
Criss.
KISS blasphemy? Dont tell that to ringleader Gene
Simmons.
Its not Ace and Peters makeup, he told the Herald
matter-of-factly. Its our makeup. Its like with the Yankees - the
Yankees own number 7, not Mickey Mantle.

VINTAGE
KISS PHOTOS
"Vintage Kiss Photos" is a new
book featuring Kiss photos from 1974 - 1981. It is very similar to the official Kiss book
"The Early Years". Almost no text, just photos!
VINTAGE KISS PHOTOS: 1974-1981, compiled by veteran KISS photo archivist Marc
Scallatino, chronicles the early days of the Hottest Band in the Land. Culled from
hundreds of rare, previously unseen images of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley,
Peter Criss, and Eric Carr, this book takes the reader on a thrilling ride through a major
chapter in KISS history.

MIKE JAPP
(from rockpages.gr)
We continue our KISS special feature with the 40th interview of a KISS-related
figure. This week, Mike Japp was kind enough to write a few words about his collaboration
with KISS. Heres an excerpt:
Mike Japp: A couple of years later Bill Aucoin came knocking on my door (Bill as
you know managed KISS back then and we still stay in touch). He asked me to go to a hotel
where Paul was staying and go do some writing, I said Ok and off I went to
meet up with Paul. It was good to see him again and we started exchanging ideas. We worked
for about 3 or 4 hours and I left there leaving behind a couple of ideas in completely
naked form that have now become known as Down on your Knees and Saint
and Sinner.
Gene and I met at SIR for the first time and off we went on a writing spree at Diana
Rosss house where Gene was staying for awhile. We wrote many things and had
different titles every other day for the same song! We would change things inside out, to
outside in; it was a lot of fun though. Paul and I had great fun also in different ways
when writing. Gene and I ended up finishing off the idea that I had left with Paul at the
hotel on the tape. That idea became Saint and Sinner (which of course had a
least 3 titles before that).
